Classroom Audiovisual Best Practice

Within a year, all classrooms will have a TV on wheels and an Apple TV which allows wireless projection on a nice bright screen. Although it is not interactive, using AirPlay to project a MacBook or an iPad, or using Apple Classroom to display student screens enhances learning and is more flexible. Here are some techniques that will help you take advantage of these devices.

AirPlay any iPad

  • You can AirPlay an iPad to your classroom display. This will mirror your iPad to the TV. In other words, you will see the same thing on both devices.
  • Benefits: mobile, lightweight, multi-function
  • Functions: any app/Magnifier/Apple Pencil/slideshows/web page annotation, etc.

MacBook Air

  • You can AirPlay a Mac to your classroom display.
  • Benefits: multi-function, can mirror or use as two screens
  • Functions: any app/Magnifier/Apple Pencil/slideshows/web page annotation, etc.

Warning – Netflix and other streaming services

  • Due to copyright protection measures from Apple, streaming Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and Disney+ content is impossible.
  • The only solution to play this content is:
    • Disconnect your Macbook from Airplay
    • Unplug the HDMI cable from the back of the Apple TV (See image below)
    • Connect the removed end of the HDMI cable to your Macbook (using the appropriate dongle for your device)
    • After playing the streaming content, connect the HDMI cable back to the Apple TV
  • If you need a dongle or help setting up, please contact the IT department.

Hybrid Learning with Two Devices (iPad + Laptop)

Keep It Simple!

Please note that if you already have a setup that works for you, please use it. None of this is mandatory! For example, run Zoom from Macbook and point webcam at you or your whiteboard or your classroom. This is an effective and simple solution.

This video (4:37) gives you a full explanation and a taste for how your classroom display and Zoom can look when using two devices and Zoom in blended learning.
