Google Forms Guide

Google Forms allow any person to collect any number of form responses to be masters of their own data. Google Forms are useful for collecting data in the form of surveys or as formative assessments. Forms allow you to give students immediate feedback on their responses.

Forms Basics

Google has made an excellent learning resource here. https://gsuite.google.com/learning-center/products/forms/get-started/#!/

Google even helps you!

Google has predictive responses – (e.g. If the question is “Which day of the week is best for you?,” it will suggest Monday to Sunday as options). You can just click Add All.

Here is a tutorial which explains the settings on your form and how to send the form.

Be careful!

A common mistake is to send the edit form link to people who you want to fill the form. Be sure to click the send button then get the URL from the pop-up. (DO NOT just send the URL of the form you are editing.)

Some Advanced Concepts

When Sending to NIST Community

  • Be sure to use NIST template (see below)
  • Be sure to add “?hl=en” (without quotes) to the end of the URL (see below)
  • Do not use the options for “Requires sign-in:” (If you use them, parents will have to sign in to Google and most do not have Google accounts.)
    • untick Restrict to users in NIST and trusted domains
    • untick Limit to 1 response

Using NIST Template Google Form

NIST has created an easy way for you to use the NIST Google Form template to get a consistent look and feel. In Drive, click on + New button and follow this graphic to choose the NIST Form template.

Forcing English Language on Forms

When you want to send the link to people to fill in your form, you click on the button for Send form. This gives you a long URL like this.

If you want to be sure that the respondents see the directions in English (or some other language), you can force the language. (Note, this will not change the language of your questions, just the web page around your questions.

All you have to do is add “?hl=en” (without quotes) to the end of the URL to force the language. Here is a list of Google language codes that you can use. Here is an example.

File Upload

You can even get users to upload files to your form. This is very handy for collecting forms, assignments, pictures, or documents.

Get Email Notifications with Google Forms

To receive notifications for new Form responses, select the ‘Responses tab‘ in new Forms and then the 3 dot icon above ‘Accepting responses’. Choose ‘Get email notifications for new responses.’
