Advanced Gmail Tricks

Below, you’ll find a couple of quick tricks that will help you to get the most out of your new Gmail account. Please try them out and see if they appeal to you. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact one of your friendly DLCs for clarification.

Preview Pane

One of the most immediate reactions a new user has to Gmail is that there is no quick way to scroll through emails to find what they’re looking for. Enter Preview Pane (not to be confused with ‘Pain’, unless it’s an email you’d rather not read!). Under settings, choose ‘Labs’ at the top. Among the options, you’ll find ‘Preview Pane’. Enable it and then Save Changes at the bottom. You will see a new button on your main Gmail page.

Play around with vertical vs horizontal split and see what you like best!

Unread Message Icon

Once again, under Settings –> Advanced, you’ll find Unread Message Icon. Enabling this will allow you to quickly see if you have any new emails in your browser. Voila!

Pinning Tabs

This isn’t a Gmail feature as much as it is an organizational tool within Chrome (sorry, not in our version of Safari). If you right-click on any tab and choose ‘Pin Tab’, that tab will move to the left and take up much less space. I’d recommend pinning your Gmail, Calendar, and Drive tabs so that they are easily accessible. Those precious millimeters of real estateĀ could make the difference!

Combine this with Opening Multiple Tabs on Chrome Startup, and you’re well on your way to being a Gmail pro!
