Data Protection Guide

There are many aspects to consider for data protection, but this guide is specifically related to encrypting devices, strong passwords, and safe file handling.

Physical Security

  • Do not use removable memory sticks. If you must, be sure to scan them first.
  • Ensure that your computer is safe and secure and not shared.
  • Your devices must require a passcode or a password before any school accounts or any school information can be placed on the devices.

Strong passwords

Safe file handling

  • Do not use removable USB media (i.e. thumb drives) unless it is required and you can ensure physical security of the USB media.
  • It is best to only store file in school systems such as Google Drive or Veracross rather than on your devices.
  • If you need to download a file to share with someone outside of NIST, be sure to completely delete the file and empty the trash.
  • Be sure to send the file in a safe manner.

Anti-malware software

  • Be sure to have anti-malware software turned on and scan your machine.
  • Scan removable memory before using.

Software Updates

  • Be sure to update your Operating System on all of your devices. Here is a guide about Software Updates.
  • Be sure to update your applications too.

Encrypting devices

  • Since files stored on your device are readable by special software applications if your device falls into the wrong hands, it is best to. encrypt your device so that the files will not be readable. Click here to read our Device Encryption Guide.
