Seesaw Guide

NIST uses Seesaw to document and communicate student learning reflections at our elementary school.

Seesaw for Parents

This video is for parents. Parent access is distributed by each teacher.

If you are departing from NIST, it is possible for you to download your child’s Seesaw journal for the future as you will lose access to Seesaw after leaving the school. Details are on our Leaving Student Guide.

Seesaw for Teachers

  • How to Use? Teachers are automatically enrolled in Seesaw. Your classes will be set up for you when school starts. Please see Learning Innovation Coaches about how to use Seesaw in your classes.
  • Seesaw Learning Journal– This is where your students record their learning. The learning journal is student driven space focused on learning.
  • Seesaw Blog– This has replaced the WordPress classroom blog. This is your space as a teacher to add context to what parents are seeing in their child’s journal. The blog is automatically created when your Seesaw class is created, and we will help you activate it. You can use all the same tools in the blog as the learning journal which makes it super user friendly. The blog is a very quick and easy way to share more about the community of learners in your classroom.
  • Announcements/Messages-This is a space where you can send announcements and messages to parents and/or students. This works much like an email. You can add attachments, pictures, videos etc. The messages pop right into the parents’ Seesaw app and therefore parents will receive a notification each time you send a message. You can watch this short video to see how this works.

Using these three spaces in tandem is a great way to differentiate communication streams with parents. We will have Seesaw parent sessions at the beginning of the year and will communicate this strategy to parents. An email that will go to parents explaining this process as well.

  • Seesaw is synched with Veracross so that new students are added to your class automagically.
  • Parent access is distributed by each teacher. Here is the Seesaw parent email template. It contains a link to the short video we made for parents so they know how we intend to use Seesaw here at NIST as well as contact details for Cheryl and Ben in case they have any issues connecting. You will need to insert your class code. Sending the PDF with an individual student QR code as well seems to work well.
  • Technical Issues? Please contact helpdesk@nist.ac.th if you have any technical issues.
  • Ben – move this to appropriate place up top.
  • Assigning to folders is possible. When assigning activities to several classes, click the folders tab and then select folder you want the activity to go in for each class.
