Digital Tech Tip – Google Voice Typing

Sometimes it is just easier to say something instead of writing down text. There are many tools that serve this function but recently Google has added voice typing to Google Docs. Here’s how:

  1. Click the Tools menu > Voice typing.
  2. A pop-up microphone box will appear. When you are ready to speak your text, click the microphone or press Ctrl + Shift + S (Cmd + Shift + S on a Mac) on your keyboard.
  3. Speak your text clearly, at a normal volume and pace. See below for more information on using punctuation.
  4. When you’re finished, click the microphone again. (text from the Google help page)

Punctuation can be added by voice for the following:

  • “Period”
  • “Comma”
  • “Exclamation point”
  • “Question mark”
  • “New line”
  • “New paragraph”

Note: At the moment, this punctuation is only supported in German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Russian.
