Google Documents at NIST

Google Documents is an excellent platform for formatting documents and collaboration.

NIST Templates and Styles

  • NIST has several Google Doc templates.
  • These can be used by anyone by using the new document menu in Google Drive and then selecting From a Template.
  • The template files already have NIST Styles and colors in them (e.g. When you choose a color, the color picker already has the four NIST colors.).

Formatting Text in a Google Document

  • Google has a formatting toolbar to use to style text as you want.
  • Google also has pre-defined styles that you can use such as Heading 1, Heading 2, Title, etc. This is an easy way to apply multiple formatting options at once.
  • If you want to change the case of a block of text, you can do so in the Format > Text > Capitalization menu. You can change to lowercase, Title Case, or ALLCAPS.

Copying and Pasting Text From Another Document

  • When copying and pasting text from another document, the text will maintain the formatting of the source document by default.
  • If you want to maintain the original style, do just paste.
  • If you want to apply the new document styles to your pasted blocks of text, you will need to click the style menu, then the right arrow on the style you want to re-apply, then Apply “Heading 2” (if you want to make a pasted Heading 2 style match the current document Heading 2 style).
  • If you paste as plain text, it respects the new document styles, but all bullets, etc. are not pasted. Shift + Command + v to paste as plain text.
