Search Tool Description



Creative Commons Search – The original image (and other media) search site

  • for images, there are four sources to choose from: Flickr, Fotopedia, Google, and Open Clip Art Gallery
  • can be used to search for music, video and other media

Compfight – An excellent Flickr image search tool that has a number of great features:

  • numerous images shown on main page (just scroll down)
      • options to refine search for just Creative Commons and those which are safe for viewing by students

 

 

flickr storm Flickr Storm – Another great site that has options to search CC images only (click advanced and then select from the dropdown menu

  • keeps a visual (thumbnail) record of your recent searches (cleared after you close the browser/tab)
  • has larger image shown when selected
                  • makes suggestions for other related search terms if you scroll to bottom of the listed items
PhotoPin – This site is listed as a place that has “Free Images for Bloggers”. It is good in that it bills itself as having an ‘interestingness’ filter. It is good, but only provides a few images at a time.
Idee Multicolr Search Lab – This search tool searches based on colour.

  • Good for when colour matters
        • Also useful when a need to think laterally

Google Image Search – Advanced
  • Google CAN search CC images, but you need to tell it to do so by selecting the Advanced Image Search link
  • Once on the Advanced Image Search page, tick the box under Usage Rights entitled Only images labeled for re-use
BONUS – Free Fotos.com

Free Fotos.com – A website that hosts free photos. Some good images here.
MorgueFile.com Morguefile, where photo reference lives.
This morgue file contains free high resolution digital stock photographs and reference images for either corporate or public use. The purpose of this site is to provide free image reference material for illustrators, comic book artist, designers, teachers and all creative pursuits.
