Parent Digital Workshop Series Intro

Parent Workshop Series Connected to NIST News

Introduction to the series:

As part of an ongoing digital skill share with our entire community of learners, NIST is happy to connect parents to a few different resources for exploring digital dilemmas at home.

The first resource that we would like to highlight with parents is Common Sense Media (CSM).

In their own words, “Achieving a healthy approach to media and technology can make a big difference in kids’ lives today.  Kids who learn to use digital media wisely can accomplish amazing things — learn new skills, explore new worlds, build new ideas, and change the world. Yet every kid has different needs. As parents and educators, we know our kids best. Common Sense is here to help. We can steer you away from things that are developmentally inappropriate, and help you find the hidden gems that are right for your family and your kids.”

At NIST, we utilize the CSM eBooks and resources for teachers and kids to teach the concepts of digital citizenship from Year one through Year 6. These resources dovetail perfectly with the wealth of information CSM provides for parents online.

Over the next few weeks we will provide a few different resources and we encourage you to explore them with an open-mind. Of course, NIST strives to be at the forefront of best practice with all of our learning endeavors. As such, some of the information that is contained on the CSM website is specific to the cultural context of it’s researchers. Therefore not all of it’s data or information is endorsed by NIST. That being said, it is a wonderfully rich site full of great information and advice.
