Video Production Projects with Students

What is the best software to use for video production projects?

  • Video editing in elementary is best done on iPads for most videos and on laptops for more complex projects.
  • Year 7 to 13 laptops come with iMovie on student devices.

What equipment is available?

  • Check out the bookable devices of our Equipment List to see list of cameras and tripods and microphones for video projects.

Want to do short video projects with your students?

  • BEFORE YOU DO A PROJECT, be sure to understand this page.

  • Be sure to make students storyboard/plan before shooting any video. PLANNING is important, and students will always want to skip planning. Make a detailed plan mandatory.
  • Each 2 minutes of video will take at least three hours of class time to plan/edit/finalize (times can vary depending on content)

  • Camera shake and poor audio are the two biggest issues, so warn students to hold the camera steady and get close to the action/subject

  • Video is about communicating a message to an specific audience.
  • Use student experts to help other students with editing.
  • Students should be in small groups (one or two) (else only one can edit at a time).
  • Students can post the final products on YouTube as “Unlisted” then get the URL sent to you via Veracross or Google Classroom.
  • Consider allowing/requiring online feedback for the student videos (either by peers, teacher, or a wider audience)

Be sure students are aware of these things!

  • Update OS to the newest OS version.
  • Update all applications to newest version.
  • Ensure 20GB free space on storage.
  • Quit other applications (not force quit). Close Chrome and safari.
  • Put video clips on the laptop, not on phone/thumb drive/portable hard drive.
