Device Batteries & Charging

The Basics

  • The iPad battery will only last approximately 4-5 hours of continual usage (reading and web searching).
  • Please use your iPad with the charger plugged in.
  • However, if you use a low-wattage charger, the iPad can still drain the battery as you use it.
  • The more you use apps such as Zoom and YouTube, the faster battery will drain.

Tips to Reduce Energy Usage

Here are some key tips to reduce iPad energy usage.

  • Lower the screen brightness down to 50%.
  • Force quit unused apps. (Click [Home] button twice to show the opened apps and close the apps that are not currently in use.)
  • Please check in [Setting >> Display & Brightness] and make sure the Auto-Lock is NOT set to Never. We suggest 10 minutes.
  • In [Setting >> Battery] There is a report of which app used more battery and any time period. Report any anomalies to helpdesk@nist.ac.th.

FAQs

Question: Should I plug in my iPad every time I finish using it?
Short Answer: You should. Since online learning requires a lot of energy usage, you should charge it up whenever you have the opportunity.
Long Answer: From the conclusion in two of its articles (Batteries & iPad Batteries), Apple thinks that the total number of complete charge cycles is irrelevant whether we keep charging every day or if we fully discharge then recharge, but that we should also make sure to do one full discharge once per month. (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

Question: I plug in my iPad while using, why does the battery still run out?
Answer: The iPad battery consumption rate is greater than its charging rate, so even with the charger plugged in the battery will still go down. Use our tips above to use less battery.

Question: What if I have an issue with charging?
Answer: Bring the iPad to the IT Department at NIST. If you are not in BKK, you can try the Apple support site.
